Everyone defines happiness differently, for some people freedom is the ultimate happiness, and one worth fighting for!!
“Independence is happiness. It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union.”- Susan B. Anthony, suffragette (A suffragette was a woman who would not suffer being powerless, so she fought for ALL women’s right to vote.)
Susan B. Anthony- abolitionist (fought to abolish slavery and prejudism against African Americans), suffragette (1820-1906)
Working closely with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony was a primary organizer, speaker, and writer for the 19th century women’s rights movement in the United States, especially the first phases of the long struggle for a women’s right to vote, which was called the women’s suffrage movement.
Originally suffragettes began the fight for the rights of black men to vote in equity with white men in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention, (and it took 17 years before that happened) when in 1865 the 15th Amendment was added to the Constitution allowing black men the right to vote.
However, the support did not extend both ways. After another 55 years of fighting for our rights to vote, in 1920 the 19th Amendment was finally added to the Constitution, allowing women the right to vote in equity with both black and white men.(4)(5)
At this time in our history, it’s important to realize just what is at stake. Let’s not let history repeat itself, let’s fight for the right for women to hold equal power and equal rights as men have now enjoyed since before we had the right to vote.
