Come and Meet the President of Finland, a peaceful, progressive and prosperous country……………….
Tarja Kaarina Halonen, Finland’s President, 2000-.
Tarja Halonen, the President of Finland, was elected in 2000, and re-elected in 2006. She’s a very popular president in Finland and throughout the European Union. When she originally ran for president, she ran against seven viable candidates, two of which were also women, and it was a close election.
-Ken of Finland writes in a blog post:
Tarja probably would have a difficult time getting elected in the US. She has been a lifelong, outspoken defender of women’s rights, gay rights, unions, and socialist causes. At the time of her election, she was a single mom, living with her boyfriend, who later became a cabinet member in her administration. Finland has continued to be a progressive nation under her leadership and I imagine she may even get re-elected for a third six-year term in 2012.
*****Other countries that have been led by women include:
Portugal; Bolivia; Dominica; Iceland; Yugoslavia; Malta; Philippines; Lithuania; Nicaragua; Ireland; Haiti; Bangladesh; Poland; Canada; Burundi; Rwanda; Turkey; Bulgaria; Bermuda; Guyana; New Zealand; Switzerland; and Mongolia.
