Cool environmental story about alternative car fuel

Cool environmental story about alternative car fuel

***

ATHENS – Fuelled only by used cooking fat, eight teams completed a 2,500-mile car rally from London to Athens on Wednesday in a bid to promote awareness of cheap and environmentally-friendly bio-fuels.

The “Grease to Greece” race, the brainchild of 34-year-old Londoner Andy Pag, took the teams on a 10-day mission across Europe in which they begged oil to fuel their cars from restaurants, motorway cafés and fast-food joints along the way.

“There is no reason why Joe Public cannot do this, save themselves a bit of money and help the environment because they are not using fossil fuels,” Pag said.

I’m considering using a homemade kit to change my car from a gas burner to using cooking oil, I know several restaurants here in town that would probably be happy to give me their once used oil!

Second Chances…What Will You Do When Yours Shows Up?

Diane Tegarden, Dec 2007

Diane Tegarden, Dec 2007

Second chances don’t come around that often…or do they? Will you recognize yours when it happens to come knocking on your door? This was the challenge I faced when I was diagnosed with lupus in 2001. What I experienced, my stages of grief and anger and denial, slowly changed to educating myself on what I was up against. Once I got going again, I discovered a new world of diet, health and renewal, but it didn’t happen by itself, and it didn’t happen overnight.

Beverly Mahone and I will talk about how to overcome adversity and turn it into a “new” second chance on her radio show “Whatever Live!” Tune in for a fascinating hour of Talk Radio.

WHAT: Interview with Beverly Mahone on Whatever Live! Radio

WHERE: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/whateverlive

CALL IN#  646-652-2594

WHEN: Thursday August 28th

TIME: 9am PST/ 10am MST/ 11am CST/ 12noon EST

Bring your cup of coffee and share your story of Adventure through Adversity tomorrow.

Word for the day…..opposites attract

Hey, have you ever come across a word that sounds like it should mean one thing, but means the opposite?

Like someone who is infamous….sounds kinda good at first glance, being famous and all, but it actually means being famous for a bad reason, like OJ. Not so good.

Well, IMHO this word sounds like it means invigorate (they sound sorta the same, right?)

WRONG! It means the exact opposite! Here it is in all its tender glory:

************************************
enervate \EN-ur-vayt\, transitive verb:

1. To deprive of vigor, force, or strength; to render feeble; to weaken.

2. To reduce the moral or mental vigor of.

Enervate is from the past participle of Latin enervare, “to remove the sinews from, to weaken,” from e-, ex-, “out of, from” + nervus, “sinew.”
Used in a sentence:
Beatriz de Ahumada soldiered on to produce nine more children, a tour of duty that left her enervated and worn.
– Cathleen Medwick, Teresa of Avila: The Progress of a Soul
How about you, got any weirdies of your own to share?

Tree hugger with her hands full!!

Tree Hugger with her hands full!

Tree Hugger with her hands full!

Good Morning Everybuddy,

I’m a tree hugger from way back, so here I am to post my tree hugger photos.

Ya’ see, it’s like this; my hubby and I are the caretakers of a huge grove of trees (23 at the last count) located on our tiny property (approx 7500 sq ft in the middle of a large city).

When we first got here in 1989, the earth was barren from misuse (the former owner thought it was ok to empty the oil from his truck into the ground, and his wife thought it was ok to empty wash water with soap, cleanser and a host of other chemicals into the backyard). Dang, even weeds didn’t grow in the yard, and weeds will grow anywhere!

So we started to amend the ground, clean out the debris from the dirt, and compost like crazy. Plus we planted trees, one or two per year, and nursed the sick ones back to health.

We have to have a major tree trimming job done by professionals every two or three years, just to keep up with the excess foliage, and for fire safety purposes.

We call our backyard the “Grove of the Amethyst Moon” and feel we are here to guard and protect Her. However, all that being said, trees are very jealous (did you know that?) so, I am taking turns hugging them and posting their pics here, or I’ll never hear the end of it!

Bright Blessings,
Diane T. and “barkfamily”   ;>

PS. This oak in front of our house is protected by the City of Pasadena, we aren’t allowed to trim it or have it trimmed, because it’s one of the oldest in the city.

How I self-published my first book “Getting OUT of Limbo- A Self-Help Divorce Book

How I self-published my first book “Getting OUT of Limbo- A Self-Help Divorce Book for Women” by Diane Tegarden

August 4th, 2008-rev 2

When I finished the manuscript for my first book “Getting OUT of Limbo- A Self-Help Divorce Book for Women”, I asked a professional editor (whose work I trusted) to edit it for me.  Several drafts went back and forth before the final edition was completed.

A gentleman that I had met through a networking group agreed to set up the manuscript in the proper format and design the cover for me.  I had the original concept for the cover in mind, and had explained it to him, then he set up three mockups for the cover, and I chose the one I liked best.

The last step was printing the book, and I asked my editor, Ann Luke, for referral to a good printer.  I ordered 480 books from him, which was the smallest order available, and had them delivered to my home in April of 2004.

I’ve been promoting “Getting OUT of Limbo- A Self-Help Divorce Book for Women” since April 2004, first only through my website, then had it listed on Amazon.com, and have now added promotion via talk show radio interviews.

The total price for the whole project from start to finish was $4,000/480 books = $8.33 production cost per book.  That does not include shipping cost ($1.20 per book) and the padded envelope it ships in (.99), which brings the total production cost to $10.52 per book.  I set my sales price at a competitive $11.95-10.52=$1.43 profit per book (if sold directly through my website).

If I sell the books through Amazon.com it actually comes out at a loss because their commission on the sales of my book is 55 percent. This means that for every $11.95 book I sell through Amazon.com they give me only $5.38 per book. If you take into account the original cost for me to produce the book was -$10.52 and my profit at Amazon.com is only +$5.38=I come out with a net loss of $5.14 per book, but at least they are selling!

I can vaguely remember the production phase taking approximately four months from start to finish; with the editing taking the longest, then several weeks back and forth over the cover, and the printer got the order out in 3 weeks. Of course, this was all at 2004 prices, I’m sure the market has changed noticeably by now! I currently have a thread on just this subject over at the Ryze Wordmeisters, Poets and Writers Unite Network, drop by to read the posts and see how other authors are getting published.

Energetically Yours,

Diane Tegarden
