How do you celebrate Summer Solstice (June 21-22)? I remember being part of the Candelaria for Yemaya on a summer solstice ….. vibrant blue ocean… warm clean sand…flower petals as offerings…..quite lovely!
Astronomical Significance:
Niman is the time when we say goodbye to our Kachinas (or spirit helpers) who have stayed with us for the last 6 month cycle, from Winter Solstice on December 21st (Soyal) to Summer Solstice on June 21st (Niman). They have brought us lessons and knowledge, now it is the time for playing and relaxing in the sunshine.
Special Dances/Celebrations:
Traditionally, Niman, or the Home Dance, is a sixteen day ceremonial that begins shortly before the summer solstice and ends in mid-July. The dance marks the final performance of the Kachinas before they return to their homes on the San Francisco Peaks until next Soyal.
Agricultural Significance:
This is a time when our first corn harvest arrives from the March equinox planting season. This is the beginning of the slow summer’s gleanings of abundance.

June Full Moon in the Hopitu Shinumu Tradition is called Kapnakoyapana, which means “Corn Tassel Coming Out Moon”. The moon’s energy reminds us to listen to the voices of balance, to try to gain the strength from both our male and female principles. The harvest will not grow if we have too much sun (male) or too little rain (female), we must both care tend our gardens as well as aggressively weed them for the plants to be healthy, and we must both consume the plants and save something back to encourage the growth cycle.

Howdeeeeeeeeeeee All,
I’ve just run into (ouch!) a new writing venue.
Called Examiner.com, it pays per page views and asks for you to fill in their short application form, plus a few other documents once you are accepted. They don’t pay upfront fees, but do pay per page views, which means, of course that I’m going to ask anyone who may be interested in my writing to view my articles and “Add me” as a favorite!
Also, they do pay a referral fee to any writer who brings in other quality writers (that’d be YOU ALL), so I’m going to give you the link and my user number so you can get started along your path to earning some extra cash.
The link to my articles is at: http://www.examiner.com/x-14744-LA-Renewable-Energy-Examiner and my user number is 14744.
I’ve just posted some good news about the National Parks going admission FREE this weekend, so I hope you’ll stop by to read the good news, mark me as a favorite and hopefully leave a comment about the article!
HUZZAHHHHHHHHHHH to the Storytellers, Poets and Bards of the World!!!

Our National Parks are in danger of being slowly destroyed by the air pollution being emitted from the cars of the millions of visitors. What can be done to protect these natural treasures?
There was an article about this subject in an email I received this morning.
***********From the NPCA website:
“Joshua Tree National Park has some of the worst air quality of any park, with record high ozone levels. On clear days visibility is 100 miles but haze pollution can cut views to 17 miles. Air pollution has also favored the growth of exotic grasses, which have altered the park’s fire regime and threaten Joshua trees.
From 1999-2003 Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks recorded 370 days with unhealthy air from ozone pollution. Over half of the Jeffrey and Ponderosa pine trees are showing some level of ozone damage.
The fine particulate matter (PM) that causes hazy scenic vistas at Yosemite National Park and others can also collect in the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs of visitors where it may cause respiratory infections.”

Dear Word Wranglers,
with the upcoming publication of my sci-fi book “Anti-Vigilante and The Rips in Time”, I’ve got a lot on my mind…like putting together a GLOSSARY for it!
You see, the future will bring new ideas, people and objects into play and I wanted to share just a few of the words I created for my novel.
Here is a brief taste of what’s to come…..
Senselles- people who came from the past with all their senses intact (unlike the people in the future who live via Virtual Reality Programming). Senselles “sell their senses” or sensory input to the BayBays, or lower classes of workers on Terrax.
MagicoMathematicians- the future wizards of computing, these people are part Magician/part Mathematical geniuses.
scattershowers- The atmosphere of Terrax is a hurricane of Coriolis winds and deadly scattershowers, composed of toxic metals formed into whip-like threads kilometers long.
BayBays- the lower classes of workers on Terrax.
Terrax- the Crystal Planet, (Earth, millions of years in the future)
Now it’s your turn to share the words you’ve coined while writing!
Energetically Yours, Diane Tegarden

Marlboro Township (NJ) Municipal Utilities Authority Deploys One of the Largest Ground-Mounted Solar Power Arrays in the East. This solar Power System will enable the MTMUA to meet nearly 40% of its electricity needs!
MARLBORO TOWNSHIP, NJ, JUNE 5, 2009 – The Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MTMUA) has deployed a new 900kW solar power array from Sharp that will enable the MTMUA to meet nearly 40% of its electricity needs with emissions-free solar-generated power. At a ceremony held today, Marlboro Township Mayor Jonathan Hornik joined with Peter Wersinger, Executive Director, Michael Messinger, Chairman, and the other Commissioners and staff of the Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MTMUA) in dedicating the array, which is one of the largest of its kind in the East.
“We’re thrilled to be deploying a significant solar array to power our water treatment and distribution operations; and pleased that it’ll be cash-flow positive from day one,” said Peter Wersinger, Executive Director of the Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority. “Based on the terrific performance of this photovoltaic (PV) energy system, the MTMUA is looking to expand its use of solar power in the months ahead.”
“This renewable power source will serve as a stabilizing component in the cost of water service, which will assist the MTMUA in maintaining one of the lowest rate structures in Monmouth County,” said Michael Messinger, Chairman of the Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority. He added that, “from the providers and installers of solar products, to the electricians who connected and wired the installations, to the metal fitters who fabricated the mounting system right here in New Jersey, this clean energy project is delivering local and regional economic development benefits. Projects such as this one are helping New Jersey achieve its long term goal of energy independence and building a strong clean tech economy.”
Additionally, on an annual basis, this solar energy system will reduce New Jersey CO2 emissions by more than 4,200,000 lbs; SO2 emissions by 28,000 lbs; and NO2 emissions by 18,000 lbs., as well as eliminating significant amounts of mercury. The solar power system was completed and placed into operation earlier this spring.

Dear Word Wranglers,
While reading about the dwindling herds of migratory animals in Africa, I came upon this fascinating word: ungulates.
Ungulates are hoofed mammals, or mammals that walk on their toes. Ungulates have evolved features that are adaptive for life on open grasslands, in particular, long legs to increase running speed. To lengthen the legs, ungulates evolved *digitigrade locomotion: that is, they walk on their toes.(*digitigrade is our bonus word)

This should keep us “on our toes” today!

Chum (noun)
1. A buddy or pal
2. Fish that is chopped up and used as bait
3. The chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, is a species of anadromous fish in the salmon family. It is a Pacific salmon, may also be known as dog salmon or Keta salmon. A Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) with minute specks on its back that is fished for food and sport.
Origin: The name Chum Salmon comes from the Chinook Jargon term tzum, meaning “spotted” or “marked”. [Chinook Jargon cam, spotted, striped, from Lower Chinook c'əám(•), variegated.] Source cited: www.ask.com
This “fishing” expedition led me to another new word…anadromous…which means:
Anadromous – (adj.) Fish that migrate up rivers from the sea to breed in fresh water. Dictionary.com • The American Heritage® Dictionary
