May 19 Is Food Revolution Day!

May 19 is Food Revolution Day, a global day of action for real food. In the United States, there are approximately 12.5 million children and adolescents who are obese. There is no denying that it is time for a change.

Take action by helping educate people about food, giving families the skills and knowledge to cook again, and motivating people to stand up for their rights to better food.

Check out this website for action you can take, and get involved: http://foodrevolutionday.com/

We can break the two party system, Vote GREEN!

Did you know that there are 133 Green officeholders as of Thursday, May 10, 2012?

For more information on truly alternative choices for political office visit The Green Party at: http://www.gp.org/index.php

There are two women and a Native American man running for President in 2012, so if you want to support the environment and help break the two party system, consider voting GREEN!

Happy Green Earth Day….

Today I wish our beloved Mother Earth a Happy Green Earth Day!

A blurbette about Earth Day:
Unlike the first Earth Day in 1970, the 20th anniversary became a huge event thanks in part to greater television and radio coverage and a multi-million dollar budget.
More than 200 million people in 141 countries participated helping to lift environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

May you Never Thirst….for knowledge…for water…for love.

The saddest anniversary ever……

This Earth Day we celebrate the saddest anniversary ever…

“April 20th was the two year anniversary of the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling platform operated by BP. Eleven rig workers lost their lives in the initial explosion, which triggered a nearly four month-long oil spill that has been killing life in the Gulf Coast ever since.

Recent reports show that hundreds of dolphins have mysteriously died since approximately 172 million gallons of BP’s oil gushed into the Gulf. What little fish, lobster, shrimp, and crab remain to be caught are disturbingly deformed, many missing eyeballs and claws.

Spill victims living in and around Louisiana during the spill, most of them children, are still dealing with illness brought on by BP’s excessive use of a dispersant known as Corexit, which the EPA specifically forbade them to use during the clean up, but they continued spraying anyway.” -Article written by Beth Buczynski.

Ok, so what can we do to insure the future residents of this planet that we’re doing something to keep this from happening again?

Here are 5 tips to reduce our dependence on oil and gas:

1. The next time you go to buy another car, buy a hybrid car that uses less gas, or go whole hog and buy an EV (electric vehicle) that drastically reduces your consumption of gas.

2. Get involved with organizations that fight against the big oil interests, like: Natural Resources Defense Council at http://www.nrdc.org.

3. Sign up with environmental watchdog groups, like Care2.com at http://www.care2.com.

4. At least once a week, take the bus, train, bike or walk to work. This will help the air quality, and your health as you get some exercise and time with the great outdoors.

5. Organize a carpool, so there will be fewer cars on the road.

If there other ways to reduce our oil/gas usage, please feel free to add them here!

Clean EVs making money for their owners!!!

The California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project is offering up to $2500.00 in rebates to new owners of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) or zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV).

The models that qualify are listed on their website at: http://www.cvrp.energycenter.org or you can call for more information to their toll free# 866-984-2532.

You can send for the application online and the California Center for Sustainable Energy will email you further instructions within 3-4 days.

The federal government is also forking over as much as $7300.00 tax credit for qualifying purchases, so I’ll check back with you after tax time next year to let you know how that program works as well.

This means that potentially you have an opportunity to get back as much as $9800.00 of the sales price in rebates and tax credits.

Good luck with your purchases fellow Greenies,

March 22nd is World Water Day!!

It’s World Water Day today!!

The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The site started in 2001 as a community space and repository where people can upload their WWD event activities and reports. The theme changes every year for which annual campaign materials can be found at the UN-Water site by clicking on: www.worldwaterday.org/

Last year’s theme was Water for Cities, which was timely considering the devastation of Japan’s people with the recent earthquake, tsunami, fires and now, impending nuclear disaster.

Here are more links to underscore the importance of clean water supplies on World Water Day:

I am vindicated…Daylight Savings Time is BUNK!

HA! Just as I suspected…Daylight Savings Time is bad, bad, bad news all around.

A friend of mine and I are having an ongoing discussion about the benefits/drawbacks of Daylight Savings Time. I side with those who hate the practice.

I had understood that it was originally for the benefit of school children, so that in the wintertime there would be one more hour of daylight in which to walk home. And, that it was for the benefit of farmers, who would have one more hour of daylight at the end of the day to bring in the crops. All this makes sense until you realize that it’s the 21st century and everyone uses electricity to light up homes, school yards, streets and farms. It was purported to save energy, because supposedly people would use less energy on lighting during these times.

On a personal note, I hate DST because in the Fall when we “Fall back” and lose an hour, it takes longer and longer every year to get used to the time change. Also, many of our clocks aren’t that easy to reset and I’m forever a few minutes late because my watch and the clock in my car are very touchy about resetting the time.

Well, I am vindicated! Turns out, the first ever study on the practice has just been completed and it found that, contrary to its supposed original purpose (to save energy), it actually causes energy use to rise.

Here is a link to an article about the study:
http://www.care2.com/greenliving/is-daylight-savings-time-costing-us-billions-in-electricity.html

Now all we have to do is get our moribund Congress to repeal the idiotic practice, and, with everything else they have to deal with right now, that Time will be Slow in arriving.

Almost snuffed out by speeding driver…

Tuesday I had lunch at the New Delhi Restaurant in Pasadena, met a new friend, had great food, an uplifting convo and was full of happy energy by the end of lunch. After lunch I wanted to go check out a new foot massager I’d heard about and didn’t know exactly where the store was, but had vague directions, so went off in search of the store location.

Driving cautiously westbound along Union Street, I was slowing down to turn left and saw a car speeding through the intersection against the red light. I slammed on my brakes, my car skidding to the left in the effort to stop, as the white sedan crossed right in front of me. I stopped a scant few inches away from its side as it flashed by.

My heart was thudding so hard against my breastbone that it hurt to breathe. Thank Goddess there wasn’t a car behind me, or it would have smashed into the back of my car pushing me right into the sedan’s pathway.

Without consciously thinking about it I started repeating “thank you Goddess, thank you Goddess” over and over again. I decided to go straight home, not wanting to brave more traffic and crazies for the moment.

I guess it just wasn’t my time to “clock out”, so to speak, because if I had been going a little bit faster, or if a car had been behind me and pushed me even a foot further into the path of that speeding car, I might have been seriously injured, if not killed outright.

Greet the day!!
