Action Needed:
Your call can stop the government from sending more troops to Afghanistan.
Dear Peace Seekers,
Now is a critical time to make your voice heard.
Call the White House comment line today and say you are opposed to sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan. The comment line number is 202-456-1111.
In the coming week, President Obama will likely be making a decision about the role of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He has rejected the current proposals for additional troops until there is an exit strategy. We believe this is a good sign, and we need more — a decision not to send more troops to the region and to deescalate the war.
The decision will have a dramatic effect on the future of Afghanistan and the stability of the region.
This is the moment when we can have an impact.
If you only take one action for peace this year, please make this phone call to the White House today. Tell them you’d like the administration to put these elements into their Afghanistan plan.
White House comment line: 202-456-1111
Talking Points:
1. No additional troops to Afghanistan.
2. A time line for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and for diplomacy and dialog with all parties to the conflict, without preconditions.
3. Badly needed development aid provided, to be coordinated by civilian-led organizations, not the military.
4. Redirect the more than $44 billion spent yearly on war to supporting real human needs in Afghanistan and at home.
Help President Obama make the best decision on Afghanistan. Please take a moment and make your call today.
Wage peace,
Peter Lems and Mary Zerkel

The City of Pasadena is participating in a nationwide one-year field trial of BMW’s newest EV, the MINI-E. According to Marco Sustaita, Staff Assistant with the General Manager’s office of Pasadena Water and Power (PWP), the program just started in August of 2009 with two BMW MINI-E’s. Mr. Sustaita has been with the City of Pasadena for 10 years, and with PWP for 4 ½ years.
Erica Rolufs, the Communications Manager with PWP for over 2 years, has test driven the MINI-E and found it “comfortable and easy to maneuver. You can feel the power of the car, it feels good to drive and it’s cute!”
In total, Pasadena Water and Power department has a small fleet of seven electric vehicles; 4 RAV4s, 2 MINI-Es and an electric truck.
For more information about the MINI-E program, call John Hoffner, the Program Manager of Energy & Conservation Projects in Pasadena at 626-744-6970.
The City of Pasadena has had their electric vehicle program in place since 1999, and driven several models of cars in an effort to include low emissions vehicles and electric vehicles in the program. The Pasadena Transportation and Public Works department also received five MINI-E’s to rate on their performance, comfort and overall usability.

May You Never Thirst!
You know, lots of times when the news media refers to “Los Angeles”, they don’t mean the City of LA, they mean the county of LA, which is huge. The areas that the fires are burning are in the San Gabriel Mountains (in the San Gabriel Valley), specifically near the towns at the foothills of the mountains.
Last week as I watched the fires rage from miles away, I could see the flames leaping 80-100 feet into the air. My poem was inspired by these wildfires burning near La Canada, FlintRidge and Altadena, which are towns just north of my house. We are in no immediate danger of being evacuated, but over 40,000 people (and their animals) have been evacuated so far. The fire chief says that due to the steep terrain, little rain and lots of dense underbrush they don’t expect this fire to burn itself out for another 80 days!
They named this fire the Station Fire because it started near a ranger station in the San Gabriel Mountains near the 29 mile marker; they still don’t know the cause of the fire yet.
Be Well,
Diane Tegarden
