I am the Voice…..chant by Diane Tegarden

 I AM THE VOICE
Chant by Diane Tegarden

I am the Voice
I will lead not follow
I will believe not doubt

I am the Voice
I create not destroy
I am a force for good

I am the Voice
A force for the god’s breath
I set the standard

I am the Voice
I Defy the odds, step up
Step Up, Step Up, Step Up!!

This hypnotic chant was inspired by attending to a Tony Robbins seminar! You can find these and other lyrics and poems in my book “Light Through Shuttered Window”.

Word for the day…do you eat jumbuck, mate?

A jumbuck is another fun word I found in a Reader’s Digest Word Power quiz….

In the song “Waltzing Matilda” it’s a jumbuck (an Australian sheep) that the swagman (an itinerant Australian laborer who carries his personal belongings in a bundle as he travels around in search of work) catches beside the billabong (a branch of a river forming a backwater or stagnant pool).

To add more deliciousness to this post I will add that: a swagman can also be referred to as a swaggie, sundowner or tussocker, and that the title “Waltzing Matilda” is slang for traveling by foot with one’s goods in a “Matilda” (a bag slung over one’s back).

Don’t ya just love it?

31 Days of Notable Women- Carolina Nairne, Scottish poet

Baroness Carolina Nairne (August 16, 1766 – October 26, 1845), a Scottish songwriter, was born in the “auld hoose” of Gask, Perthshire to Jacobite parents. Throughout her lifetime, she wrote various poems and songs, which she kept a secret from everyone in her life, including her husband, WM Nairne. Her works have been praised for their vivacity and eloquent style, and were often published under the pseudonym of “BB” during her lifetime mainly because it was not socially acceptable for women to write poetry at that time. She loved the Scottish countryside. She died in her family’s home on October 26, 1845, at the age of seventy-nine. Her songs are said to be second only to those of Robert Burns in popularity. Her legacy is also important because she adapted popular melodies and helped by so doing to preserve much of Scotland’s musical heritage, which would otherwise have been lost.

31 Days of Notable Women- Beyonce, music/ business mogul

Beyoncé Knowles, the 29 year old singer, actress, dancer, and clothes designer made it to Forbes World’s Most Powerful Women list for 2010 with earnings of over $35 million dollars. The Houston-born diva ranks unusually low on our list this year because she didn’t tour or release an album over the past year. But her fourth solo effort “4” is on the way. The simple title was reportedly selected by her fans and is also a nod to her April 4th wedding anniversary with hubby Jay-Z. In the absence of new revenue on the music side, business-focused Beyoncé cashes in on her clothing line “Dereon” and massive endorsement deals with L’Oreal, DirecTV, and General Mills.

More Bad…a Halloween song by Diane Tegarden

More Bad….
(A filk song, to the tune of My Favorite Things)
by Diane Tegarden

Witches on broomsticks and whiskers on kittens,
knitting the dog into warm woolen mittens,
big cauldrons filling with all kinds of slag,
riding the wind with my favorite hag.

When the rat bites,
when the bat stings,
when I’m feeling bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I can feel-
More bad!

Freaking the neighbors
with singing and howling,
burning the fence down,
and cackling and yowling.
Big pregnant moon
caught up in a swing,
These are a few of my favorite things…

When the rat bites,
when the bat stings,
when I’m feeling bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I can feel-
more bad!

“WHAT THE HECK IS FILK MUSIC?
by Nick Smith- from www.filk.com

Well, it’s sort of like folk music. It is a mixture of song parodies and original music, humorous and serious, about subjects like science fiction, fantasy, computers, cats, politics, the space program, books, movies, TV shows, love, war, death. . .

Filk music started off forty or fifty years ago, at science fiction conventions, where people got together late at night to have good old-fashioned folk music song circles. Well, late night circles being what they are, some folks got a little silly and started singing song parodies about their favorite SF books and authors. Fans started writing song parodies about themselves or each other. Some started composing serious songs about favorite topics.”

And that’s where it all began!

My Salvation, not what I expected

My Salvation
by Diane Tegarden
09/29/05

Verse#1
For all the times
I wanted you to save me
but you couldn’t
- I cried.

For the depth of emotions
I’ve felt
that you never met
-a heartfelt sigh.

Chorus:
You thought I was a broken doll,
You were wrong.

I thought you were my salvation,
I was wrong.

Verse#2
As hard as it’s been to love you,
I didn’t want us to part.
But you’ve been stuck
inside your own head
-and I’m alone again.

Chorus:
You thought I was a broken doll,
You were wrong.

I thought you were my salvation,
I was wrong.

Verse#3
My love began a brilliant light,
now it’s a falling star.
What once was burning fire,
a guttering candle flame.

Chorus:
You thought I was a broken doll,
You were wrong.

I thought you were my salvation,
I was wrong.

A Getaway by Diane Tegarden and Wade Webb

A Getaway
written by Diane Tegarden and Wade Webb

Driving so fast
I’ve got my cool rays on
I won’t turn around
It was so clean.

Chorus:
When I see it going down
it ends so quickly
Here’s my escape
A getaway
(run, run, run, run away)

Hot highway
Beach blazing by
No thoughts in mind

Chorus:
When I see it going down
it ends so quickly
Here’s my escape
A getaway
(run, run, run, run away)

Another hit
across the board
A silent war.

Chorus:
When I see it going down
it ends so quickly
Here’s my escape
A getaway
(run, run, run, run away)

This was written about a hit man who just finished a job; imagine the music as cool, almost jazzy rock.

Garden Rose- a song for Spring

GARDEN ROSE
Lyrics by Diane Tegarden/ Music by Wade Webb

VERSE 1:
OUR MOTHER IS THE EARTH IT SELF
FATHER’S THE SKY ABOVE,
WE HER CHILDREN
HEAR HER CALL,
SHE CRIES FOR HELP
WE KNOW WE’VE GOT TO SAVE HER.

CHORUS:
THE MEAD SHE GIVES IS PURE DELIGHT
THE INCENSE OF HER GARDEN ROSE
IN THE MOON LIGHT………………. SHINE LOVERS FAIR

VERSE 2:
SINCE I’VE KNOWN HER,
SHE HAS ALWAYS HELPED,
WHEN I CRIED OUT,
SHE ANSWERED ME.

IN THIS WORLD
OF STRESS ‘N’ DOUBT,
HER HANDS REACH OUT
FROM DEEP IN THE EARTH
TO COMFORT ME.

CHORUS:
THE MEAD SHE GIVES IS PURE DELIGHT
THE INCENSE OF HER GARDEN ROSE
IN THE MOON LIGHT……………….. SHINE LOVERS FAIR

Monday’s Poem…is a song!

Too Cute To Kill
Music by Wade Webb/ Lyrics by Diane Tegarden

V1
You’re at my window, baby
throwin rocks at 2:00 a.m.
You break my dreams,
you trash my sleep,
then I let you in….

Chorus:
Because you’re
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill!

V2
They say that blondes have all the fun
the fairer sex, it’s true.
They must’ve made that saying up,
for someone just like you!

C2:
Because you’re
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill,
you break my dreams,
you trash my sleep.
I know I’m in too deep!

Bridge:(Dreamy)
The phone rings as I greet the sun,
you say you’ve lost your keys.
Can I come get you-
please?
Another morning gone.

V3
Well you know, that you’re the type
that stumbles when you fall,
if it weren’t for clumsiness,
you’d have no grace at all.

Because you’re
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill,
you break my dreams,
you trash my sleep.
I know I’m in too deep!

V4
When we have guests
you manage to,
just say all the wrong things.
But babe, the way you’re built,
don’t worry bout a thing,

Because you’re
too cute to kill,
too cute to kill,
you break my dreams,
you trash my sleep.
I know I’m in too deep!

Author’s Notes:
The hook for this song was based on my telling my tabby cat (Rusty) that he was “too cute to kill” when he’d do something wrong and I was ready to brain him. After I had told him that for the nth time, Wade said “hey, that’d make a great hook for a song”, so then we wrote it!

I find poetry in song lyrics, some of the best songwriters of our time are poets.
