Back to Square One…

number one-2Just exactly how the phrase “back to square one” (meaning, back to the beginning) came about is a controversy. Some believe it was first used in the game of hopscotch (another fascinating word).

“Hopscotch is hopscotcha game that can be played with multiple people and the course takes place on numbered squares that are written onto the ground, similar to a grid. Players throw a marker into one of the squares, then they attempt to hop through the course while avoiding the square containing the marker. The player hops to the top of the course and then back to where they started: square one, retrieving the marker along the way back.”
