I can’t quite remember, what is an engram?


crossword puzzleI discovered this little gem in a crossword puzzle! An engram (noun) is “a presumed encoding in neural tissue that provides a physical basis for the persistence of memory; a memory trace.”

 

brainWhen used in the medical field, an engram is “a physical alteration thought to occur in living neural tissue in response to stimuli, posited as an explanation for memory. Also called a “neurogram.”

 

Etymology: 1905-10; from German Engramm, from Greek en- in + gramma letter
