I was feeling punky the other day, and wondered where I had ever picked up that word!
Feeling punky means “feeling run down, tired, worn out, dragging, on the verge of getting sick with the flu or cold.” It’s supposedly “old San Francisco slang”, according to The Urban Dictionary.
The original meaning of punky (an adjective) is:
1. of, like, or pertaining to spongy wood; the rotted core of a log or tree (punk)
2. burning very slowly, as a fire.
Origin of punky: 1872 Americanism, of wood, from punk (n.1) + -y (2).
