On November 28, 1981 the Philadelphia Inquirer explained that the meaning of the term Black Friday has to do with retail shopping venues making a profit. It is the one day in the year when retailers can go from being “in the red” which, in accounting, means having a negative balance or loss in the books, to being “in the black” which, in accounting, means having a positive or profit balance in the books! It has nothing to do with race at all!
Since I do accounting, I know that the Friday after Thanksgiving (the first shopping day of the holiday season) can mean the difference between a business having a profitable year or a year showing a loss. The moral of the story is…don’t go looking for evil where none is present.
